Go Longer: Truck Bed Extender Buyer's Guide (2023)

| Buying Advice

Here are some easy ways to increase your truck’s cargo-carrying capacity.

Tori TellemWriterManufacturerPhotographer

Before we get started, let's do some basic math: The length of a common ladder is 9 to 13 feet. A kayak? Generally, that's around 8 feet. A standard pickup bed length? That's 6-and-a-half feet. (Yes, bed specs change when you're talking fullsize or midsize trucks with a shortbed or longbed configuration, but we're talking averages here.) You can see the problem, which is that cargo length is sometimes greater than available truck bed length. However, there is a solution: a truck bed extender.

A bed extender can assist with longer cargo if your truck didn't come with one from the factory. It's such a useful feature that even the all-electric 2023 Ram 1500 Revolution concept was presented with an added bed extender. What you'll find here are several aftermarket options that meet virtually any budget. One thing to note, the prices of these truck bed extenders were approximate when this article was published and can change, so keep that in mind when shopping.

What Does a Truck Bed Extender Do?

The name says it all: It extends the truck bed. You can gain up to 4 feet of length for hauling everything from recreational toys—such as ATVs, motorcycles, or even a small boat—to work truck items, including plywood and pipe. Before you buy, you'll want to first check for any compatibility issues if you have a tonneau cover and whether you'll need to also buy a hitch pin for your style of bed extender. The other important question to consider: gate (like what's seen here) or hitch?

Types of Truck Bed Extenders: Gate and Hitch

The two prevailing truck bed extender styles are gate and hitch. Gate types are flip-down, clamshell-like, and U-shaped and utilize the tailgate to give you around 2 extra feet, while also providing an enclosed storage space inside the bed when the tailgate is closed. It's not the same as a bed net since that usually stops ahead of the tailgate at the foot of the bed. The hitch-based bed extenders are T- or U-shaped and are typically inserted into a standard 2-inch hitch receiver. Max load weight varies, but 350 pounds is usually the limit. Some offer height adjustability so that you can gain length behind or above your pickup (aka bed or roof).
